As the novella opens, we are introduced to Arthur Kipps. At the beginning of the story, he is a retired solicitor (lawyer). He used to work for Mr. Bentley before his retirement.
He lives with his wife, Esme, and four stepchildren. One night, he happens to be with his family at home. His children are telling supernatural horror stories. Eventually, Arthur Kipps is asked to tell a story.
The retired solicitor is quite irritated because he is not interested in supernatural elements, and he leaves the room.
