William Congreve’s “The Way of the World” is considered as one of the best Restoration comedies. The play has not lost its popularity even today, for it is still occasionally performed.
The play was first performed in March 1700 at Lincoln’s Inn Fields in London. The reaction of the audience and reviewers was not highly positive when the play first premiered because the majority of the audience still carried the morality of the previous decades.
