This short story is based on my personal experience and official information explaining how to convert your own the driver's license.
As a foreigner if you have a valid driver's license (International Driver's License is not valid in China) issued in your country, you can convert it into that of China with few proper documents and computer based simple tests.
To get this kind of convenience you have to hold your home country's driving license. In case you don't have it, you have to take a driving training course in the designated driving school by chinese government and then take the required written and driving tests.
If you are applying for the license of more than 9 seat equipped passenger vehicles, you need to take an additional road test beside the written test.
The computer based written test is available for you one more time without an additional charge, though you fail the first one. However if you fail on second time again, you should re-apply from the first.
After having the regular chinese driving licnese, if you want to add more category in your license, you should take the same procedures for new one.
