Young widow Annabeth Smyth is raising her son Walter during the French Occupation of Newport Island. With the Revolution ongoing and the island under French rule, her parents-who are known Loyalists-struggle to keep their business running in the face of fear and prejudice. When an opportunity to save the business presents itself, Annabeth’s parents jump at the chance to save it.
Sergeant Major Benjamin Anstruther is tired of war. With his father’s death at the hands of a British privateer and his mother seriously ill, trying to balance duty and family is wearing on him. During an assignment to protect General Washington, Benjamin meets Annabeth and her son.
