Description

"Vivid and remarkably fresh...Philbrick has recast the Pilgrims for the ages."--The New York Times Book Review

Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History
New York Times Book Review Top Ten books of the Year

With a new preface marking the 400th anniversary of the landing of the Mayflower.

How did America begin? That simple question launches the acclaimed author of In the Hurricane's Eye and Valiant Ambition on an extraordinary journey to understand the truth behind our most sacred national myth: the voyage of the Mayflower and the settlement of Plymouth Colony. As Philbrick reveals in this electrifying history of the Pilgrims, the story of Plymouth Colony was a fifty-five year epic that began in peril and ended in war. New England erupted into a bloody conflict that nearly wiped out the English colonists and natives alike. These events shaped the existing communites and the country that would grow from them.

  • A Great Read

I grew up 10 miles from Plymouth Rock and there was so much I still didn’t know about this story beyond making goofy paper Pilgrim hats as kids for Thanksgiving. What started with so much promise ends in so much tragedy in this fast moving book. The story spans generations and tells how the sons of two original Pilgrim/Native peacekeepers defied everything their fathers had worked for and went to war with each other, changing the future of the country forever. I enjoyed the history lesson and I recommend it.

Fantastic. I’ve never read a historical account type of book and I loved it.

Well written and thrilling account of the early New England settlers and the native Americans they replaced. Sad stories but true! A compelling read! Well done Mr. Philbrick!
  • Great Book, Friendly Apple iBooks Price (Nov 2019)

There are several reader comments objecting, quite rightly so, to an excessive Apple Books (AB) price tag of $19.99 (for an e-book, we emphasize, while the hardback may often be found in remainder bins at B&N marked down to $5.98). I don’t know if today I happened across an unannounced AB sale or what (next week is Thanksgiving, that may be the connection), but I just now bought an e-copy here on AB for the far friendlier, and e-book appropriate price of $2.99. Get ‘em while the getting’s good!

  • Excellent Book; Terrible Illustrations

The maps and photos included look like they add a lot to the text. These maps and pics are essentially thumbnails. The writing is so small and pixelated you can't make out the letters. Update the images and this would be a 5-star book for me.

Good read and a good account of the pilgrims. Not as good of a flow as "In the heart of the sea" but none the less still well written.....

While the quality of the writing is great, my e text is filled with typos. It is distracting and cheapens the experience of reading a good book!

Yes, I know the Mayflower landed in 1620 but after that, whatever I learned in in school has long sailed away at age 72. This book really puts names and faces on the Pilgrims and their hardships. The impact of the Plymouth settlement long term on the Native Americans of New England and the story of King Phillip (Indian) will definitely hold your attention. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars was part of the book gets bogged down in political details which was slow reading at just before I shut off my iPad for me to go bed. If you know the geography of New England as I do, you will be surprised how many chapters mention sites using the names of current cities and towns.
