Description

From NYT bestselling author Brent Weeks comes the first novel in his breakout fantasy trilogy in which a young boy trains under the city's most legendary and feared assassin, Durzo Blint.

For Durzo Blint, assassination is an art -- and he is the city's most accomplished artist.

For Azoth, survival is precarious. Something you never take for granted. As a guild rat, he's grown up in the slums, and learned to judge people quickly -- and to take risks. Risks like apprenticing himself to Durzo Blint.

But to be accepted, Azoth must turn his back on his old life and embrace a new identity and name. As Kylar Stern, he must learn to navigate the assassins' world of dangerous politics and strange magics -- and cultivate a flair for death.

I gave up about halfway through this paper-thin plot revolving around lifeless characters. I will not invest my time or money in another Weeks novel.

I read this book in 2011 and was instantly hooked on Brent's style and the worlds he created. I'm a fan girl for life. Even if he makes his fans temporarily homicidal.

A very well done fantasy that grabs your attention early and keeps it. Full of very likable yet very flawed characters. Terrific action.
  • Enjoyable but could use some polishing.

This book is definitely an enjoyable read. However, it could use some polishing. It was as if Brent Week's editor grew tired of editing his work, and skimmed through the rest of it without bothering to correct some issues. I hope this review doesn't scare anyone from reading this book though! The plot and the characters were very interesting!
  • Favorite series ever!

I found the first book in a bookstore, then I had to have the others. I re-read them over and over and even got my boyfriend hooked on them. Took them to Europe with me for any down time too. Definitely recommend reading!

The Way of the Shadow is a superbly written novel, delving into the dredges of what it means to be human, to walk away from life or to accept and fight for what is right and what should not be allowed. The characters introduced are not inherently good, nor are their reasons morally right, but there is enough in their character that shows that in life there is a line, and when it cannot be crossed, the decision made will define who the character can be and whether redemption is possible. There are many crucibles in life for these characters and the following books will surely drive them to the breaking point. Some will come out alive and some will be broken beyond recognition. Brent Weeks is a master at character and world building. The history and characters are fully realized and beautifully described, making it easy to be drawn in and lost in The Way of the Shadows. **Originally posted on goodreads
