Description

Pride and Prejudice meets the Wild West

A young British duchess fleeing from her husband's murderer. A widowed American cowboy with a small daughter. Their second chance at love.

At twenty-one, Jane Langley the Duchess of Chatham is too young to be a widow. Her husband's misguided duel with his ruthless younger brother leaves him dead. The new duke's menacing threat to Jane—marry him or else—has her fleeing her home to America for safety and an opportunity to where she can buy her own property. Although Jane worries about her new role as a landowner in the Wild West, she wonders if a proper British duchess will be accepted in a land that lacks propriety. Does Carson City have a high society? Or does she become a pioneer woman? Her concerns change the morning she meets the ruggedly handsome cowboy, Mr. Bellamy.

Heath Bellamy is no stranger to misery. He lost his wife shortly after their daughter was born, and for the past two winters, the cruel Nevada blizzards killed too many of his ranch's cattle. They need grass to survive. When a new owner takes over the neighboring big spread, he sees the possibility of the herd grazing on her land.

When their relationship turns from friendship to deep affection, they must decide if love is worth risking getting their hearts broken all over again.

"The Duchess and the Cowboy" is a historical romance novel of approximate 66,000 words. No cheating. No cliffhangers, and a guaranteed Happily Ever After!

This author is a superb story teller! Her characters are engaging and/or despicable, whichever is warranted. This particular story is beautifully written and easily holds your attention throughout. I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this delightful tale. I look forward to reading more from this talented writer!

I rate this about a 3 1/2 stars. It was a good read. Very clean book. So if your looking for steamy romance you won’t find it in this book. I liked both Jane’s and Heath’s characters. Liked that it was a short read that didn’t have page after page of fluff.

I sort of finished? I wanted to like this. I did. But I just couldn’t get into. The writing didn’t flow. And even aside from that, I didn’t get the story choices. Why give us so many chapters before the title characters even meet? Seriously, it was about 40% in before they even met. Then another 100 (iPhone) pages spent on...I don’t even know. I finally gave up. I was also bothered by certain choices to move the “plot” along. Like a younger brother dueling with his older, titled, brother wouldn’t just become the next duke. In 1888, dueling was illegal and the younger brother would have been tried for murder. Even if he’d have gotten off easy being nobility, he most certainly wouldn’t have just become the next duke like that. Also. I’m pretty sure a widow is checked for pregnancy before the next heir is titled. Yet we’re supposed to believe our duchess didn’t figure it out for five months? Oh and a widow has more freedom than a maiden. She wouldn’t need her brothers chaperonage for a walk with a man. Especially not in freaking Wild West America. Like seriously. No one was concerned for her reputation. Idk. So many holes. So much superfluous nonsense that didn’t add to the story. I might not care but in one of the scenes, the author makes a point to talk about nobility and titles and how to address people. Ultimately, I quit because I was tired of waiting for the title characters to get to know each other. I skipped 70 iPhone) pages and somehow she went from being 5 months surprise pregnant and “not interested” in Heath to in a relationship with him. Not sure how it happened so fast when the first 380 pages accomplished nothing. So I skipped again and got some pages about Priscilla and Christopher. I guess they’re next. But i don’t care.

Without giving the story away, I had some suspicion as to why Lady Jane felt like she did. Just a fun read!!!
